About our Hardwood flooring Refinishing and Sanding
Re-finishing and sanding your hardwood floors is necessary in order to preserve their quality and beauty. Re-finishing is carried out solely as a way of enhancing the wood’s natural color and to give it protection it from the elements.
The best time to sand and re-finish a hardwood floor is when moving into a new house or apartment, as all of the furniture, rugs, etc. will need to be removed from the flooring anyway. Carried out properly, a re-finishing should last around ten years. However, high traffic rooms will need to be re-finished more frequently.
Here at All Wood Flooring , our floors come in two types:
Pre-finished Hardwood Floors
A relatively new, but increasingly mainstream, product. Pre-finished hardwood floors can be acrylic impregnated, engineered, or solid. They have a tough factory finish, which is the main reason for their popularity. They are also extremely easy to install and eliminate the need for messy sanding.
Most prefinished floors constructed within the last ten years are urethane- finished. If you’re unsure that you have this kind of floor, you can test it by placing a couple of drops of water on an inconspicuous area. If, after 15 minutes, it turns white, this is your finish
There is a dustless sand less system for all alum-ox acrylic . Finished floors called TY-Kote™ or BONA™ Prep
A Basic Coatings product
Older floors, on the contrary, are likely to come in shellac or varnish finishes. Unfortunately, these do not work well with urethane and need to be completely removed before you can apply urethane. If you do decide to replace an older finish with that of urethane, you need to be aware that there is likely to be a certain amount of aluminum oxide in the floor.
And that the alumex will almost certainly show up if not cause a finishing reaction.
Unfinished Hardwood Floors Installed to be Sanded and finished on site after the hardwood floor installation is complete
These can be both solid and engineered, but both kinds need to be finished entirely on site. They come in varying lengths and widths. Sanding and finishing can take anywhere from a few days to a week depending on the floor size, stain, and number of top finish coats required. Generally, finishes used are oil or water-based.
Our highest priority is to give you a beautiful floor, but at the same time protect the rest of your home. So whether you have chosen finished or unfinished floors, we will section off other areas and furniture in your home, to prevent sanding dust from spreading. Our dedicated and dependable crews are also experienced in using dust-containment systems, which limit the amount of dust that becomes airborne.
As with re-finishing, it is important to make sure there is as little air flow as possible in the area, not just to prevent breathing difficulties but because airborne particles can become embedded in a newly-applied finish. Something as simple as walking on the floor, or even turning on an air conditioner/heating system, can stir up a great deal of dust.
To avoid such problems, we make sure to allow as much time as possible to elapse.
If your floor has a limited amount of surface wear, we also offer screening (also known as buff and top-coating). In essence, this will give your wood surfacing a new lease of life, ‘freshening’ it up. Screening allows the wood to be given another coat of finish and frequent applications can minimize the need for a complete re-finishing.
Screening enables the surface to take another coat of finish, and frequent applications can reduce the need for complete re-finishing. However, if you have a waxed hardwood floor, screening is a difficult process to carry out, unless all of the wax is first removed from the floor.
Our re-finishing service is guaranteed to leave your floors looking absolutely beautiful. We guarantee your complete satisfaction, so call us now for a free, no-obligation estimate, at your home, with one of our crew.
Clarke American Sanders have their own You Tube Channel
DUSTLESS SANDING All finishes All Hardwood Applications Complete on schedule contracts
member the NWFA, BBB
Allhardwoodfloor ltd believes in optimum Quality
including Ethics and service
We use Clarke American floor sanding tools
these are the Industry Standard because of their design weight and power
A Hummel is only a finishing sander meant for the fine pass only it weights only160lbs and cost about $5000.00 making it cheap enough for and entry level machine
Many other companies do not angle sand their floors leaving a less flattened look with the rolling scalloped grain effect,
Trowelling of finish offers the best look
again most other floor companies do not trowel the finish over the bare wood
Its very important to maintain certain standards and consistency.
Glitsa (TM) Swedish finish is the conversion Varnish that is widely used all over the world
It is also a one of a kind conversion Varnish in a three component system where the under coating
Is a two component mix and contains a light amber tone delivery is about 300 Sqft per gallon
The gold seal top coat is an opaque or cloudy transparent with no amber tone and contains the tuff stuff
\when applied over each other during a certain duration the two different kinds of solvents meld and create a toned down look where you cannot see the heavy built up look .Swedish finish implies a soft subtle looking finish. The nicest looking most durable awesome finish available.
There are not very many Hardwood floor trade people who know the secrets to success when applying this product, Up until the early Eighties BC hardwood had the sole distribution rights to this product
As a Protégé of Ray Crompton and starting in the business as an apprentice with them I had the opportunities that are just not available today especially when it comes to mentorship and practical experience . Now thirty years later I am the Dominant Hardwood floor layer sander finisher
And Glitsa(TM) Swedish finish is the dominant Floor coating They also pave the way in the water based and water borne products.
People fear the formaldehyde in the product which is actually one sixth of one percent.
The aroma is the die butyl alcohol and the toluene
There are lots of alternatives to Conversion varnishes such as Basic Coatings (TM) Street Shoe A 2 component water borne finish
Available in all sheens and a non slip finish suitable for Gymnasium coating which I rate as third place
In a residence or a gymnasium A word on sanding floors with vacuum hoses to a dust containment
I have been sanding floors for thirty years .there are circumstances where the DUST FREE HOSES sanding is compromised
And an old fashioned sanding bag will still need to be employed
You see the machine variable are set the weight power and speed in revolutions
Sure you can adjust the downwards pressure the tension. And you can adjust the amount of new cut per pass
But you must have the ability to move quickly depending on what species of Hard wood or soft wood floors you are sanding. If you want optimum results some times called over the industry standard put forth by the NWFA National Wood Floor Association
